Jagvar’s !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! got me thinking, why did you get rid of your first car?

Kinja'd!!!

This was my first car, a 1997 Ford Explorer Sport in Portofino Blue with the SOHC 4.0L V6. My granddad bought it new in 1997 and was gifted to me when I was 16 instead of being traded in on a Ford Escape.

October 2015 was a shit month for me. I was a field engineer for an oil field service company and they had me working in the office in San Antonio as my crew had just been dropped by our largest client. I was in my hotel room on Thursday night and I get a call from my boss, not good. He’s like we’re furloughing you, there’s a meeting in Alice tomorrow at 10:00, you don’t have work tomorrow just be at that meeting. So I packed my things, checked out of my hotel a day early, and hit the road for Corpus Christi. About an hour into my drive, I encounter some traffic doing less than the posted 75 mph speed limit, so I have to slow down. Upon passing this traffic, I reengage my cruise control sent to about 82. The car starts accelerating until it gets to 77 mph, then the engine goes to idle and turns off. I coast to a stop on the shoulder. Fuck. I pop the hood, nothing looks wrong, plus I don’t have any tools. So I do the next logical thing, try and crank the engine. It would start idle for about a second then RPMs would slowly drop to 0 and die. It wouldn’t respond to any inout from gas pedal, so I couldn’t keep it running. I do this for about 10 minutes until it fires up and I have throttle control. I put it in gear and drive back to Corpus.

I attend the meeting in Alice the next day, driving the M3 instead, and get 3 weeks of unpaid furlough thanks to the oil prices. I’m out, going back to Georgia. Now I had been toying with the idea of replacing my Explorer with something a bit newer. The idea started with the revelation that an AMG Mercedes is only like 30k and that I could have two 400hp+ gas guzzling tire destroying sedans. I eventually decided that was a bad idea, I should get something more practical. So I’m sitting on my parents porch in Georgia, doing some car shopping. I come across this 128i for 16k. Upon my return to Texas I decide I should get it. The explorer had been unreliable the whole time I had it and it was getting to the point where it was spend a bunch of money on it or trade it in. I traded it in, got $1000 for it. Had it for nine and a half years and had an emotional attachment to it, it was time to move on however. I had planned on keeping it for a long time but it dying on the interstate was the final straw. Don’t regret it either, can’t hang on to things forever.

So what about you oppo? Why’d you get rid of your first car?

I just got rid of mine but there is no poetic story to it. It was a reliable car, but I tried something new and it surpassed my car in every single way.

The 09 Accent was good for what it was: an econobox. My new Forte5 is much more quiet and comfortable and much faster. I liked the Accent and made the most of it, but I never loved it.

The first car I bought after college was a brand new 2002 Chevy Cavalier LS Sport. It was marvelous. And I loved it

I sold it 4 years later. My work commute was over 70 miles round trip on a busy highway. It seemed like there was at least 1 major accident a week. Most of the time, it somehow involved a Cavalier (confirmation bias, I’m sure).

On one of my trips home, I saw the aftermath of a particularly nasty accident. The motor compartment for the vehicle was gone. The engine was upside down leaning against the concrete barrier. It was a Cavalier.

As I drove past, I thought to myself, “I’m gonna die in a Cavalier.”

Bought a crew cab truck. Sold Cavalier some teenager

It was an 86 Nissan Pulsar and let’s just say the build quality dual airbags and size of the 1995 Saturn SL1 was appealing. Plus it had some electrical issues that were caused by the gigantic stereo I installed by trial and error in high school. Was happy to see it go and drive a brand new car.

I joined the Navy and it was just sitting at my parents’ house. It was a ‘72 Gran Torino that I was given when I was 16. It didn’t run when I got it and I had to put in a new engine so it wasn’t exactly free but I learned a lot from working on it. Still, in the mid-80s a Gran Torino wasn’t exactly a cool ride.

I only drove my actual first car once, an E34 touring. It blew up on the way home, and I sold it to someone to use as a parts car after a few months. After that I had a ‘69 Volvo 144S that I got barely running. After some attention, it was a reliable daily for a few months. Tried switching to a Weber for acceptable power, which turned into a months long ordeal of swapping carbs and manifolds, and I never got it running right again. I sold it a couple years ago to cover part of my road trip to Montreal, and I still miss it.

I got rid of my Wrangler once I couldnt afford the gas. I was making around $7.50/hr working retail and gas was somewhere near $4/gallon at the time. I was getting about 180 miles to the tank and was driving back and forth to work, school, and my girlfriends so it had to go. :(

My first car was my Mom’s second car a Ford Ranger. It was never really mine to begin with, and it stayed at home after I graduated HS. However even if it was mine to keep I probably would’ve gotten rid of it soon anyway. Simply I just didn’t need a truck and the Vulcan V6 got pretty bad gas mileage.

Plus the thing was horribly maintained previously, because my mom bought it from a construction company. I replaced the air filter at 60k miles and I’m pretty sure it was the factory filter. There was what looked like small charcoal briquettes in the bottom of the filter housing. Amazingly though aside from me doing basic maintenance on it, the only problem it had was a clutch fluid leak a few months ago (It’s now my sister’s first car). Considering how bad I abused that thing it’s reliability is rather impressive.

I didn’t sell it, I just relinquished it’s daily driver duty. After driving it home one day from a brake shop, I came to the conclusion that the $700 it needed then, would soon turn into $1400, and then keep climbing from there, since I don’t have the time to do it myself if I’m DD it. I then remembered that I could afford a new car, and bought a car that I wanted since it came out.

My first car was a hand-me-down ‘02 Impala, just like this one but with a beige cloth interior with the 3 seater bench up front. It was my grandma’s car before I drove it. Every corner had a dent or scratch in it. It had gone through 2 transmissions, everything in the car shook at speed, and the driver-side passenger door had a habit of opening up while driving. Drove it for a year before trading it in on a VW.

My first car was a family hand-me-down Buick LeSabre that my parents, themselves, had bought used. Took it up to college, where first and second gear almost immediately began slipping. Eventually took it to a great little mom-n-pop transmission place and got the transmission replaced. Then it started developing some sort of electrical gremlins that no one could figure out. I’d be driving, when suddenly the car would die and I’d lose my power steering. The last time was when a friend and I were following each other to a coffee shop and my car died on the freeway with a semi barreling down behind me. For a moment, not even my brakes were responsive. Coasted it off the freeway and my friend had Triple A tow it back to my apartment. That was the last time I ever drove that car. :(

1991 Mercury Tracer LTS; a 4-door Escort GT basically. Finally learned how to drive stick in that car. And to heel-toe.

It had manual windows. I could lower them all while driving. My dad paid for a CD player and better speakers. I loved that damn car.

Traded it in for $350 on a 2002 SVT Focus in 2006. It had 115k, ran poorly from years of using a cone filter with a MAF sensor. I put a Pacesetter exhaust on it; sounded like shit.

I still miss the simplicity of driving that car. It was way more fun than it had any right to be. I kept the SVT Focus until last year. Bought it with 42k on it. Sold it with 112k. Loved that car too.

My new GTI is working well. It’s quiet, doesn’t rattle, and has something called mid-range torque. Which is addictive and very useful. Also it has plaid seats.

Got rid of my first car when it was cheaper buy an almost identical one with half the kms on the clock and slightly better specs than fixing it for TÜV. Cruise, hatch (had a sedan before) but same colour and engine. And yes, the hatch really tied the whole car together!

After 12 years of driving GE 626s, I sold the second one for a penny on the dime when it developed an ecu? failure that would let a cold engine idle but killed it if you tried to rev it when it had reached operating temps. I was too broke at the time to invest in a replacement parts roulette.

It was sad to see her go, especially as it meant living without motorized transportation for a while, and I really loved that daft barge, but truth be told, the GE wasn’t exactly Mazda’s prime, and there’s a reason that these things are almost forgotten.

I had the inside done (basically hot glued the fabric to the seats and headliner) and had the exterior primered in flat black. There may or may not have been a four letter word in giant letters down the side that dried so you could see it in the right light. I got busy with my summer job and didn’t have time to finish it, and the neighbors were complaining. It was a 98 S-10. It was lowered, had 18" wheels, a little stereo, among other things, all installed by the previous owner. It was also a regular cab, 2.2L, 5 speed, 2wd. It. Was. Slow. (Did alright on gas, though. But I didn’t really care in 2004-05.) I sold it because, while I liked it, it never really was “me.” I didn’t pick it out.

I sold it, and put the money towards (actually, it pretty much covered the cost of) my 1995 Z28. T-tops, 6 speed, and a healthy V8. That’s really what I wanted from the start. Sure, it was 3 years older, had 40k more miles, and I was the 6th owner... But it never gave me trouble.

I only kept that car for a year, too. I made money on it when I sold it. I was working at a dealership, and was getting too accustomed to moving around newer cars without owning one myself.

Kinja'd!!! Land_Yacht_225 > E90M3

Kinja'd!!!1

That’s a long and complicated story, but suffice it to say that the circumstances under which I got the car prevented me from actually ever forming a real emotional bond with it.

I was 16, and my parents had always bought brand new, 0 miles on the odometer, complete pieces of boring, lower middle class garbage. Being that we never had a luxury car, I wanted a Cadillac Fleetwood or a Lincoln Town Car. Both were well within my price range, much to the dismay of my father. All he could come up with to shoot those down was “they’re too big.” Well, then I started shopping around. My original criteria was leather bench seats, column shift, and a V8. That list of requirements grew as I learned how much I could actually get within the budget, all the way to a 1997 BMW 740iL. The main problem with being 16 is that your parents have to put their name on the title, so try as I did, my father would conveniently forget what I had said I wanted, always going back to leather bench seats, and a column shift and trying to find the smallest possible vehicle that met those requirements and absolutely nothing more.

Kinja'd!!!

Enter Roxy, my 1994 Buick Park Avenue Ultra. Optioned like an off-the-lot special, the only extras it had over a base model were low speed traction control and the Delco tape deck. No moon roof, no seat heaters. I bought it for $3,000 with 110,000 miles. There was rust on the chrome rear bumper topper and water in the tail lights. The passenger side plastic rocker trim was held on with rivets... It was a dog, it wasn’t what I wanted, it was unreliable, and would never replicate it’s problems for mechanics.

Within 6 months the transmission was slipping, and would go into and out of reverse with the subtlety of a 50mm cannon shot. The exhaust sheared off at the catalytic converter and dumped out right below the driver’s seat. And bumping into a curb while parallel parking at about one mile per hour had rendered the power steering inoperative when turning right. 4 months after that we found the first metal donut in the garage, which turned out to be the washers for the front K-frame’s mounting bolts. After finding three of those, my father finally admitted the car may no longer be safe to drive. Traded it in on my 1998 Continental a month later with 10,000 more miles and still got $1,000 on trade in because they never put it on a lift. I found out through the grape vine that it didn’t get $500 at the auction later that week, which is good because in the end I felt I paid $500 too much for that Continental.

Shit I just remembered, someone stole my front bumper and plate and then made it look like I fled the scene of an accident. But I didn’t do it, I swear.

My first car was an 84 Isuzu trooper II. It had a whole host of problems including a rod knock, a hub that wouldn’t lock and it wouldn’t crest 80 even when it was in good shape. When it finally spun a bearing I scrapped it and picked up an 89 SHO.

Because it was a Dodge Omni...with a carburator and an automatic. And it was 3 years older than me. And had developed some weird issue where it would lose power over half throttle like it was being starved for air, fuel or both, and it wasn’t worth enough to figure it out. Still miss some of its weird quirks though.

This was my first car, 1995 Ford Taurus GL. Hand down from my family, it’s previous job was a company car for HP. I really did like this car, gave me that sense of freedom. Its life ended when I got in a minor accident, and it was written off for $1,500 in 2004. Replaced by another Taurus of the egg shaped variety.

My first “car” was a 2005 Honda Pilot, we still have it though but my brother is using it and soon it’ll just be an extra car for whoever wants to use it. I just hated driving a giant tank that guzzled gas so when my dad bought out the lease on my mom’s 2012 Hyundai Elantra, I decided to take it. I may have to use it again during the winter.

How could something that was demonstrably your property be used in a bank lien/repossession/auction on a business you were not a partner or party of? That doesn’t make any kind of sense.

Short answer: I was broke.

Slightly longer answer, the transmission lunched itself, (probably not helped by the fact that at 19 I believed the gas pedal had only two settings, all or nothing) and I ended up trading her to this dipshit friend of my dad’s who said he was going to build a dunebuggy out of her.

Dude got the Nova and my entire life savings ($400) and stuck me with an ‘83 Camry that A., he didn’t actually have clear title to, and B., fried its entire electrical system in about a week due to some amateur mechanicing performed by said dipshit.

(Same dipshit who bought my dad’s rust-bucket 914 for like $50 and a case of beer and then promptly lost it in a poker game, thus denying me the chance to wrap it around a tree being stupid ever drive it)

I’m still pissed at that guy. (And at younger me, who, even at 19, should have known better than to trust the kind of people my dad attracts)

I almost let go of mine twice. My first car is a 2012 GLI, and in the 2 years of ownership, it’s saved my ass twice.

First, we almost sold it when i got rear ended. Mom wanted me in an SUV, and was set on getting me in to a 2006 Touareg V8. I wanted a fun car still, so that fell through, and i kept the GLI...

...for a total of 20 days, untill a guy ran a red in front of me, and i hit him.

That caused a lot of damage to the front, but luckily, we got the same insurance agent, and the car went to the same shop. Thanks to some luck, and a bit of cost saving techniques, my car was spared from getting totaled, by $150.

Now, it sits in my driveway, with a larger turbo, intercooler, exhaust, performance clutch and actual LSD. It makes 360 horses. I’m not getting rid of that thing any time soon :)

Why did I get rid of the G35? Well I already bought a sedan for commuting (W210 E300DT) and I wanted something sportier, so I bought an E85 BMW instead.

Why did I get rid of the Merc? Because I crashed it in the rain and totaled it out, thank you very much.

My first truck was totaled when someone made an illegal u-turn in front of me. I t-boned her car and it was a little more than the poor little truck could handle.

I went to check on the car 2 weeks after it was dropped off really quick like one day. It just sat in a corner with a tarp over it pretty much used as a table with shit on top of it. Owner wasn’t there, wouldn’t answer the phone ever. Car was in Pasadena and I was living in San Antonio. A month after that the whole building was flattened.

All repairs were under the table because he was a friend of a friend who my dad did a favor to in exchange for the repair.

I’m a professional in car repair but I don’t know crap about paint and body stuff. He was going to hook me up. No repair order made.

Tax issues and some shit to do with child support was the reason he said F it and took off the Mexico somewhere forever.

The cars was clean but had an impact in the passenger front corner. Since it was under a tarp super mega dusty without a repair order. They most like just assumed it was scrap like the actual scrap cars all around the facility

Still seems like negligence on the part of the bank to not run the VINs to determine ownership of the vehicles. That’s fucked up. Sorry, Uly.

1987 Nissan stanza

I treated it like shit, dogged it out all the time, lost compression in a cylinder, parents donated it to a charity. But I stripped the interior first. Then I eventually threw all that crap away.
